The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman who worked as Marilyn Monroe's maid and co-wrote a book about the storied actress' life has died in Manhattan. Lena Pepitone (peh-pih-TOHN') was 86.

Pepitone's family said Wednesday that she died from a heart attack at her Upper East Side apartment. They said she was found dead Tuesday when a family friend went to check on her.

Pepitone was Monroe's maid from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. She co-wrote "Marilyn Monroe Confidential," published in 1980. She was also known to cook for Monroe's famous friends. A biographer of Monroe husband and baseball great Joe DiMaggio wrote that Pepitone kept Monroe's bedroom in order and also cooked Italian dishes for DiMaggio.

A son, John Pepitone, said his mother was born in Naples, Italy, on Feb. 7, 1925.

Albert Pepitone, Psychology

Albert Pepitone, professor emeritus in the department of psychology at Penn, died in suburban Philadelphia on March 17. He was 93 years old.

Dr. Pepitone’s contributions to the field of social psychology opened up areas of research that significantly broadened its scope, particularly by calling attention to cultural issues. He earned his BA from New York University and his MA from Yale, then entered the aviation psychology program of the Army Air Force, where he worked on the selection and training of personnel. After working for the Commission on Community Interrelations in New York and briefly studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he followed Leon Festinger, a social psychologist noted for cognitive dissonance and social comparison theories, to the University of Michigan, where he completed his doctoral dissertation (published in 1950) on the effects of motivation on social perception. He came to Penn in 1951, rose through the ranks and helped to maintain social psychology as an area represented in the department.

Dr. Pepitone studied a great variety of topics, including beliefs about justice and fair distributions, group cohesiveness, hostility, quantitative aspects of judgment, interpersonal attraction and the use of “nonmaterial beliefs,” such as the belief in fate, to interpret life events. When possible, he took a cross-cultural approach to these topics. His concern for issues of perceived justice and injustice extended to practical applications, such as judgments of appropriate punishment for crimes. His book, Attraction and Hostility: An Experimental Analysis of Interpersonal and Self Evaluation, was published in 1964 and re-issued as a new edition in 2006.

He also contributed to the overall discussion of the nature and purpose of social psychology. He believed human behavior to be multi-determined, and that a micro-analysis of any one facet (the psychological, the biological or the social) was terribly inadequate. He was fascinated by animal behavior and was a serious student of history, sociology and politics. Whether discussing the migratory patterns of birds or the impact of Marxism on later social movements, he was constantly making connections and bridging areas of understanding. His view of social psychology was similarly broad in scope. He saw individuals in their sociocultural worlds from this complex, multi-layered perspective. This view was his most significant contribution to the field.

His distinguished career included Fulbright research fellowships to the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the National Institute of Psychology in Rome. He also held visiting professorships to the University of Rome, the University of Venice and the University of Bologna. He lectured in Italian and spoke several languages. He was elected president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (1975), the Society for Cross-cultural Research (1978) and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (1983). He retired from Penn in 1992 but remained active in research.

For many years, Dr. Pepitone and his wife, Emmy, also a social psychologist and a professor at Bryn Mawr College, opened their Ardmore home to faculty, colleagues and graduate students from Penn and Bryn Mawr for conversation on far-ranging topics.

He is survived by his three daughters, Leslie, Jessica and Andrea; and six grandchildren.

Assunta PipitoneAssunta Pipitone Obituary

September 19, 1922 - July 21, 2017
Obituary

Assunta (née Prezioso) passed away peacefully July 21 surrounded by all her 5 children and grandchildren. She would have been 95 in September. Sue or Susie as she was called lived a dynamic life raising 5 children, tending to 12 grandchildren and enjoying 12 great grandchildren all while founding a business and running three homes in Belleville, NJ; Point Pleasant, NJ; and Pompano Beach, Florida. She loved Silver Lake best. She was also one of the founders and charter member of Belleville UNICO Ladies Auxiliary. Festive holidays were always held at Sue's homes complete with sumptuous meals and beautiful table settings and decorations, as well as weekly summer feasts down the Shore where no one in her family went to restaurants, her food was too good at home. Imagine making 100 meatballs weekly from meat that she had to freshly grind. Sue even turned her two car garage into a beautiful dorm room to house family in Florida in the winter. Lots of love. Music always filled the air wherever she lived and Sue would think nothing of flying to Nashville to get in a good concert, then to Atlantic City because it had music and other things. Only advanced age could slow her down, but she remained intellectually alert until the end.
Sue is predeceased by her husband, Vincent Pipitone, Jr. who died in 1974. And two infant sons, Vincent and Salvatore. Also predeceased by parents Salvatore and Raffaella (née Squitieri) Prezioso, brothers Salvatore, George and Carmen, sisters Margaret Raimondi and Eleanor Nigro. Surviving are her children Nina Colannino, Raffaella Ruglio, Vincent Pipitone III, Anthony Pipitone and Suzanne Fenelli. Also, Andrew Colannino, Alfred Ruglio, Enid Pipitone and Renee Pipitone, their spouses. Loving grandchildren, Andrew, Suzanne Rae, Michael, Vincent, Alfred, Marisa, Suzy, Vincent IIII, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Adriana, and Anthony. Loving great-grandchildren Rachel, Charles, Mark, Andrew IIII, Elise,Jennifer, Brooke, Matthew, Gemma, Domenic, Vincent V, and Everly.

Maria Pipitone Milasinovich, daughter of Leonardo and Marianna Pipitone of Sicilian Ancestry was born on December 24th, 1922 in Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Her family moved to the Greater Detroit, MI area in her early childhood.  In the late 40’s she resided in Colorado where she conceived and raised her first two children, Leonard and Doreen.   She returned to Detroit, MI where she met and married Daniel Mark Milasinovich and conceived and raised 6 more children.  In  1978 she returned to Colorado with her 3 youngest sons.

In the late 80’s she visited Italy with a companion and while there looked up relatives in Rome, Italy and Acomo, Sicily.  She found many and ended up staying for a couple of months. Note: Elderly Italians were shocked that she spoke the old Italian/Sicilian dialect. They wouldn’t let her go!

Maria being raised the way she was, saw her surroundings in Acomo littered with garbage and started picking up the trash.  Children saw what she was doing and asked “Why are you doing that” to which she responded “This is such a beautiful place why wouldn’t you?”   The children followed her example and a cleaner Acomo was her blessing for being treated so well while there.

She returned to Colorado where she spent the rest of her days and passed on January 3rd, 2016 in Blackhawk, CO.

She is survived by immediate family:  Sister- Shirley Ann Fillinger, Brother-Dean Pipitone, Daughters- Doreen Michael, Melanie Milasinovich, Katherine Marie Milasinovich Rowe , Sons-Leonard Braund, Mark Milasinovich,  Daniel Milasinovich, Michael Milasinovich and Richard Milasinovich and their sons, daughters, grand-children, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Maria loved the Arts, particularly Music, Singing, Dancing, Poetry and Cooking.  She was an excellent Oil Painter in her own right and also a member of the Choir of St. John’s Catholic Church in Loveland, CO.

She attended St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Nederland, CO in 2014, including Easter Mass.  She enjoyed being at the Church and speaking Latin to the Priests who were visiting from out of town and conversing with Parishioners during their Festive Easter meal.

In her final days she had the opportunity to speak to virtually her entire immediate family and passed with her 3 youngest sons and our caring friend, Katie, by her side.

An excerpt from her eldest daughter, Doreen is very fitting to close…

“I will thank you for the rest of my life for all the prayers you prayed for my family and me.  They were the perfect gift only a Mother could give her children.”

May you rest in peace in God’s perfect home.
